Hospitality

For those with hospitality qualifications and interests there are many jobs in the rural sector.

No job is just one thing, so if you decide to work in an outback pub you will find yourself doing everything from cleaning to cooking, bar work to gardening!

There is work for:

  • teachers and graduates
  • cooks and chefs
  • nurses
  • hotel and general hospitality workers
  • domestic workers, cleaners
  • kitchen hands
  • Mother´s helps and nannies
  • students and gap year students
  • servicewomen
  • horse riders (for the combined jobs)
  • and anyone who is willing to have the experience of a lifetime!

The options are:

Outback Pubs - working in the bar, kitchen, cleaning the rooms and anything else that needs to be done. At peak times of the year these jobs are sometimes available for two people.

Outback roadhouses - working behind the counter, serving fuel, cooking steak sandwiches, cleaning, gardening, painting and anything else that needs to be done. These jobs are sometimes available for two people.

Working in Trail Riding centres - here you would have a mixture of hospitality work and horse riding (if you are good at that), or teaching children holidaying at the farm. Those wanting horse work must attend the short course at the farm.

Host Farm work - again you could be doing anything, inside or outside, so that you need to complete the course at the farm before taking up the job.

Chefs and cooks are in short supply in the outback and are thus very well paid. Those with these skills and qualifications can expect to get the highest pay, whether you are working in a pub or roadhouse (on an hourly wage) or on a cattle or sheep station (weekly wage).

You could be a Station Cook on an Outback Station, catering for up to 20 people, or you could be a Camp Cook, miles out in the bush - first making a hole, filling it with stones, collecting wood, lighting a fire and THEN using your culinary skills!

All jobs provide free food and accommodation, so what you earn is what you can save - less the donation to the Taxman.

If you are already in Australia and want roadhouse or pub work only please complete the Domestic only section of the application form.
There are very few jobs opportunities in this section for young men as the outback hospitality employers need girls to encourage to local young men in - to drink and eat!

If you want to be doing anything at Trail riding centres or Host Farms or cattle stations which include horses, cattle, machinery or tractors, you will need to complete the agricultural course at the farm.

What ever you decide to do, you will have the adventure of a lifetime.
